  • 15 April 2009: Website redesign: what redesign?

The website has had a complete makeover. I have been working on it for the last six months, so what's new? Why doesn't it look any different?

Home page with new events calendar.

Well, it's all "under the hood": the website is now driven by a database on our web-host's server. Anyone with a suitable log-in name and password can enter data (match results, team sheets, club competition entries and results, event details, etc.) into the database via a series of forms. The information will immediately appear on the relevant page or pages (look for the ".asp" at the end of the page name). Hopefully the website will be updated more frequently than my dwindling free time allows.

Why haven't I done this before? Our previous web-hosting was free but we were not allowed to put databases on the server or to run any server-side program scripts. Last season we changed our web-host for one who, for a fairly modest annual fee, will allow databases and server-side scripting.

I have also taken the opportunity to revamp the programming throughout the site. For those more technically minded: all the menus etc. are written using the jquery library and on the home page is a new AJAX event calendar which loads information from the database on demand. Please have a look at this calendar; when I started its beta-testing, I was approached by two interested software houses, one wanted to buy the program and the other wanted to buy me! I'm afraid that I turned both of them down.

My next big job is to produce the 2009 club diary and then I shall start putting-up redesigned archive and picture pages.

I hope you will enjoy the slicker and more up-to-date Forth website.
